Gold Mind Telecom Selects Aperto PacketWave® for Regional Multiservice Broadband Network in Shanxi Province, China

Innovative provider builds wireless high-speed Internet access for schools, industry, government offices

Milpitas, Calif. and Hong Kong, (January 13, 2003) – Aperto Networks, a leading provider of new generation scalable broadband wireless access systems, today announced that Gold Mind Telecom of China has chosen the company’s 5.8 GHz PacketWave systems for deployment in Shanxi Province. Gold Mind will use fixed broadband wireless as the primary mode to provide access and deliver content custom developed by Gold Mind for schools in the community, the area’s mining and energy production industry, and government offices in the city of Shahe.

The service provider will deploy Aperto’s PacketWave turnkey systems exclusively for its IP network, and expects to build a 2003 subscriber base of thousands of users in this initial market, alone.

"Aperto’s systems have the flexibility and functionality we need to fulfill our ambitious deployment programs," stated Gold Mind president Jack Chu. "Our offerings will include high-speed Internet access and LAN extension, VoIP, distance learning applications, videoconferencing, VPNs and streaming media for a diverse user base. The unique resource-sharing between our schools, production facilities and municipal agencies means we have a wide variety of needs to meet. Aperto’s flexibility and performance in meeting those needs is second-to-none."

Gold Mind is part of a consortium of companies including Culturecom of Hong Kong. The group of companies and its affiliates are prime movers in delivering a mass-market priced, native Chinese character-capable network computer for broad consumer use. In conjunction with the devices needed to support in-country applications and users, Gold Mind Telecom is chartered to support the growth and market success for Chinese ISPs, and cost-effective deployment of multiservice connections nationwide.

"We see the support of the government, such as the partnership between Gold Mind Telecom and the National, Guangdong and Shanxi provincial Chinese ministries, as key for market uptake in near term," stated Agatha Poon, senior analyst with the Yankee Group’s Convergent Communications Asia-Pacific Planning Service. "This broadband access initiative will not only provide a viable alternative for broadband users, but more importantly, it will help move broadband adoption well beyond the metro coastal market in China." Ms. Poon is the author of a November 2002 report, "Fixed Wireless Services in Asia-Pacific: Networking Without Boundaries."

"Gold Mind is pioneering multiservice broadband network rollout for education, industry and government end-user markets in China, based on Aperto’s 5 GHz solution," stated Dr. Reza Ahy, chairman and CEO of Aperto Networks. "The company’s model is a great example of leveraging rapidly deployable broadband wireless networks to address the enormous pent-up vertical market demand within Asia Pacific. We look forward to supporting Gold Mind in its rapid network scale-up."
