Aperto Networks Sees WiMAX Forum as Key Catalyst for Rapid Market Adoption, Affordability of Broadband Wireless Access

San Jose, Calif. Broadband Wireless World Forum Conference, (April 8, 2003) – Aperto Networks, leading provider of new generation scalable broadband wireless access systems and member of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) Forum, has announced its intention to be a prime mover in this newly-rechartered systems interoperability test and certification organization.

Aperto already supports over 60 service providers in 25 countries worldwide, and views WiMAX as the key industry catalyst for rapid adoption and affordability of IEEE 802.16a-compliant broadband wireless systems.

"As a founding member of IEEE 802.16a and leading broadband wireless access player, Aperto Networks has a great deal of insight and technical knowledge to contribute to WiMAX," emphasized Margaret LaBrecque, WiMAX president. "Aperto’s carrier-class approach to wireless access will help to bring a focus on reliability and quality of service to the interoperability certification efforts."

"We will be among the first end-to-end systems vendors to certify for interoperability and standards conformance," stated Aperto chairman and CEO, Reza Ahy. "It’s clear that WiMAX will be one of the strongest cross-industry deployment accelerators for standards compliance.

"The forum will also serve as a critical testing and certification bridge to other fixed wireless access standards organizations worldwide. And since Aperto has played a lead role in helping IEEE 802.16a and ETSI to reach consensus on PHY and MAC specifications, it logically follows that we will be prominent in ensuring that WiMAX reaches its goals," he continued.

"The IEEE 802.16a Working Group set a new precedent for the scope and speed of building worldwide participation in standards development," further detailed Dean Chang, Aperto director of product management, and publicity chair and secretary of the IEEE 802.16 Working Group. "With over 80 wireless equipment vendors involved, we completed this work even faster than the 802.11 Ethernet and Wireless LAN standardization efforts. We now look forward to a rapid pace of accomplishment for WiMAX, as well."

WiMAX will present an educational seminar on its charter of activities on Thursday, April 10 at 8am at this week’s Broadband Wireless World Forum in San Jose, California. Aperto’s Dean Chang will deliver opening comments at that session. More information on the organization is available at http://WiMAXforum.org/about/exec.asp.
