Aperto Selected by Wideway Do Brasil for Country's First Unlicensed WiMAX Deployment

Milpitas, CA (June 19, 2007) – Aperto® Networks, builder of the world’s most advanced WiMAX base stations and subscriber units for fixed, portable, and mobile applications, today announced that it’s PacketMAX™ line of base stations and subscriber units has been chosen by Wideway Do Brasil LTDA, a leading provider of Internet services in Brazil, for that company’s first WiMAX deployment.   "This is a tremendous win for Aperto and our WiMAX Forum® Certified PacketMAX technology," said Manish Gupta, Vice President of Marketing & Alliances for Aperto Networks and WiMAX Forum Board Member. "It demonstrates how our award-winning technology can be used to provide affordable broadband wireless voice, data, and video services in dense urban areas like São Paulo, as well as more sparsely populated regions."   Wideway’s deployment will take place in two phases: 1) a pilot test in one city in the State of São Paulo; and 2) a national rollout. The pilot will be conducted in the unlicensed 5.8 GHz band and will include multi-sector PacketMAX 5000 base stations, single-sector PacketMAX 3000 base stations, and PacketMAX 100 subscriber units. Phase 1 will begin in third quarter of 2007.   "Given the scope of this deployment, we conducted rigorous testing against many competing before choosing Aperto PacketMAX," said Sergio Mantovani, Sales Director of Wideway. "We found PacketMAX to be the most reliable and feature-rich solution on the market. We also valued Aperto’s extensive field experience in unlicensed bands. This experience will help us to quickly test and roll out our high-speed wireless network across the nation."   The Aperto family of products delivers the critical elements required to extend wireless broadband services to a wide range of users—ranging from large enterprises and public-sector organizations to multi-tenet buildings and residences—using a single, standards-based platform. The company’s flagship product, the PacketMAX 5000 base station, is also the only carrier-grade base station that can support and operate both the IEEE802.16-2004 and IEEE802.16-2005 WiMAX standards simultaneously.
