Aperto Selected by Skytelecom Co., LTD. for First Commercial WiMAX Deployment in Indochina
MILPITAS, CA(September 26, 2007) – Aperto® Networks, builder of the world’s most advanced WiMAX base stations and subscriber units, today announced that its award-winning PacketMAX™ solution has been selected by SKYTELECOM Co., Ltd., a leading service provider in Southeast Asia, for the launch of the first commercial WiMAX service in Indochina. The initial deployment will take place in the city of Vientiane, Laos, and will provide broadband wireless voice and data services to both business and consumers. "The availability of license-exempt WiMAX products is an important milestone in our product strategy," said Manish Gupta, vice president of marketing and alliances for Aperto Networks and WiMAX Forum Board Member. "The market has been demanding 5 GHz products for some time now, and Aperto will offer the only carrier-class license-exempt products available. We see tremendous applications for service providers, wisps, and enterprise customers worldwide, especially in areas where spectrum availability has long been an issue." "We are extremely proud to be selected by SKYTELECOM for such an important project," said Michael Pratt, CEO of Aperto Networks. "Laos is rapidly developing and needs a proven wireless solution to support the growth of its economy. Our PacketMAX solution provides this, as well as the QoS necessary to provide differentiated service levels to different types of customers." SKYTELECOM’s deployment of PacketMAX will take place in September and will be followed in October by a commercial trial. The initial deployment will test PacketMAX 3000, Aperto’s single sector base station, and PacketMAX 100, Aperto’s outdoor subscriber unit. Both products are WiMAX Forum® Certified and will be supported by WaveCenter™ PRO EMS, Aperto’s GUI-based, carrier-class element management system. "We chose PacketMAX based on its features, scalability and reputation for reliability," said Warit Vongsriungruang, Assistant to CEO. "In addition, PacketMAX provides a very cost-effective path for migrating to theIEEE802.16-2005 standard down the line. We don’t want to invest in technology that will become swiftly outdated." The PacketMAX family of products delivers the critical elements required to extend wireless broadband services to a wide range of users—ranging from governments, large enterprises and public-sector organizations to multi-tenet buildings and residences—using a single, standards-based platform. The company’s flagship product, the PacketMAX 5000 base station, is also the only carrier-grade base station that can support and operate both the IEEE802.16-2004 and IEEE802.16-2005 WiMAX standards simultaneously.
