Aperto Networks Wins FCC, Industry Canada Approval
for 5 GHz Wireless Systems in North America; Commercial PacketWave
Now Shipping and Generally Available
Milpitas, CA, September 10, 2001 - Aperto Networks, a leading
developer of second-generation fixed broadband wireless access systems,
has received regulatory approval of its end-to-end PacketWave
multiservice platform from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission
and the Canadian regulatory authority, Industry Canada.
The North American approvals complete the regulatory process required
to begin revenue shipments. Aperto has already obtained regulatory
approval in selected overseas markets where licensed or license-free
5.8 GHz spectrum is readily available, clearing the way for Aperto
to ship systems to global service providers.
Achieving these milestones is the final step in readying
our systems for commercial shipment, stated Alan Menezes,
Apertos vice president of marketing. Our scalable, point-to-multipoint
PacketWave systems have been field-proven in customer trials since
January 2001, and are now ready for revenue generating services.
These regulatory approvals come at a critical time for carriers
expanding their broadband service footprint, said Peter Jarich,
Strategis Group's director of global broadband research. "Carriers
now need multiple options for multiservice delivery to customers.
The momentum Aperto is setting in the fixed broadband wireless access
sector is more urgent than ever in today's environment."
Aperto's PacketWave solution uses a common platform across all
spectrum bands. The systems operate in the 2.5 (MMDS), 3.5 (FWA),
5.3 and 5.8 (UNII) GHz frequency bands. The newly introduced 5 GHz
radio solution will be complemented by radios supporting the additional
frequencies in Q4 2001. This family of radios allows service providers
to operate simultaneously in multiple frequencies on the same equipment,
and gives wireless operators investment protection while maintaining
flexibility for future deployments across multiple markets.
